Rose Care

Spring / Summer

April 15th- Remove mulch from around roses, trim any small stems and all dead stems. Trim good stems back to a solid stem with a bud facing toward the outside of the plant if possible.

Early May- Start a spray and fertilizer program. J and J Rose Production uses a mix of spray that includes an insecticide, a fungicide, and a miticide. We fertilize with Mills Easy Feed, a liquid fertilizer. Spray and fertilize every two weeks to have healthy, disease free plants. Continue this through August.

As roses bloom through the growing season, trim expired blooms to promote new growth.

Fall/Winter

We are getting close to the end of the season! You should be getting prepared to put your roses to bed for the winter. Late November and early December is the best time to do this. Cut your roses back to about 24 inches tall, and protect the plant with mulch, piling it as high up the canes as possible. Placing a cage around each rose will help to keep the mulch in place.

If your roses are in containers, in early December move the pots into an unheated garage or shed. Water these as necessary though the winter(should only need to be watered twice during the winter). The important thing is to keep the wind off of the stems. The pots can freeze.

Uncover your roses in mid-April.

Check back in the spring to see when our sales will be.
